When an electronic device is said to be in a solid state, it means that it does not have any moving parts. This is the reason why solid state drives or SSDs are called as such. They do not have any moving components, as opposed to an HDD or hard disk drive, which presents many benefits over the other type of storage devices.
In general, solid state drives work faster than hard disk drives. For one thing, they start up faster since no spin-up is needed. Random inputs and outputs are also faster. Solid state drives can also work up to five times faster than the high-end HDDs today since reading and writing latency is very low. Latency refers to the minimum amount of time that it takes for data to move from one location to another.
In some cases, solid state drives also last longer. It takes about 10 years before degradation occurs on any kind of flash storage. This lifespan can further be prolonged by refreshing its contained data periodically. With such a practice, the data can be stored in the SSD indefinitely.
The fact that solid stare drives contain only a few to no moving parts at all presents other benefits for their users. For instance, smaller units consume less power and produce less heat. Small SSDs are also silent, although some noise may be produced by bigger units since they often having cooling fans. Most solid state drives are also capable of enduring shock, vibration, and high altitude and temperature. Lastly, there are fewer chances of having a mechanical failure when the drive has no moving parts.
You can also expect consistency in the performance of solid state drives, as opposed to hard disk drives that may slow down over time due to fragmentation. When an HDD becomes fragmented, the PC takes more time to seek data, but thefragmentation effect is more minimal in solid state drives.
